Deputy Superintendent of Police to head team

Empowerment committee led by Collector constituted

KALPETTA: Stringent action will be taken to curb atrocities on tribal people in Wayanad, especially those working in ginger fields in the neighbouring States, V. Santharam, Inspector-General of Police, Kannur Range, has said.

He was speaking to mediapersons after an inquiry into the reports of atrocities on the tribal communities in the district at the Collectorate hall here on Saturday.

Mr. Santharam said that a special task force had been constituted under the leadership of a Deputy Superintendent of Police (Special Mobile Squad) in the district.

The task force consists of the Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) officer; district officer of the Social Development Department; three members from tribal organisations, including two women; and the District Labour Officer. This team would visit ginger fields in the neighbouring States to study the ground realities and submit a detailed report.

An empowerment committee has also been constituted under the leadership of the District Collector, which comprises representatives of the departments concerned. Its aim is to arrange awareness programmes among tribal communities.

A block-level awareness programme will be conducted on this issue soon, Collector P.P.Gopi said. “A list of farmers and sponsors who take the tribal people to the neighbouring States for work will be made to curb the atrocities,” he added.
