Plea to disqualify two Congress MLAs

Special Correspondent

PANAJI: Minister for Tourism Francisco X. Pacheco of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Friday submitted a petition to Speaker of the legislative Assembly Pratapsingh Rane seeking disqualification of two Congress MLAs.

He sought the disqualification of Minister for Public Works Churchill Alemao and MLA Reginaldo Lawrence, both members of the erstwhile Save Goa Party (SGP), questioning the constitutional validity of the merger of the SGP with the Congress a few months ago.

Responding to the unexpected political development, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat described the action of one of the Cabinet colleagues as “unfortunate and inappropriate.”

It was not expected that a Minister would file a petition against his Cabinet colleague, he said.

Mr. Pacheco, who represents Benaulim constituency in the Assembly, a traditional home turf of Mr. Alemao, has been at loggerheads with the latter over various political issues.
