Demo staged against nuclear deal

DAMNING THE DEAL: Activists of the PMC, the CPI (M) and the CPI protesting against the nuclear deal, in Puducherry on Saturday.

PUDUCHERRY: Activists belonging to three political parties – the Puducherry Munnetra Congress, the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) - on Saturday staged a demonstration protesting against the India-U.S. civilian nuclear deal.

Wearing black badges, the activists hoisted black flags at the venue of the demonstration near the Tamil Nadu State Express Transport Corporation depot as a mark of protest against the deal.

Speakers including vice-president of the PMC K. Lakshminarayanan, national council member of the CPI R.Viswanathan, secretary of the Puducherry unit of the CPI (M) V. Perumal and his CPI counterpart N. Kalainathan alleged that the deal would be detrimental to India’s sovereignty and economic independence.

Mr. Lakshminarayanan said the deal had thrown a big challenge to the democratic traditions of the country. He accused the United Progressive Alliance government of adopting an ostrich-like policy on the issue. Flaying the government for not debating the issue in Parliament, he said the deal should not be signed without evolving a national consensus.

Mr. Viswanathan said the deal had clauses which were in favour of the United States. Mr. Kalainathan said the three parties had come together to highlight issues affecting the people. The PMC, the CPI and the CPI (M) would launch a campaign against the acts of commission and omission of the territorial government in 23 Assembly segments from October 14 to 17, he added.
