Industrialist loses Rs. 12 lakh in lottery scam

BANGALORE: One more Bangalorean fell prey to an Internet lottery scam, which cost him Rs. 12 lakh, the police said on Friday.

Govindaraju, who runs an industry on Peenya 4th Cross, received an email saying he had won $500 million in a lottery.

A series of mails were exchanged between him and the sender between June 18 and July 21 this year, and Mr. Govindaraju deposited the amount in tranches in the account numbers given to him. Later, the sender called him from New Delhi seeking another Rs. 4 lakh saying there was a problem in withdrawing money.

Mr. Govindaraju asked the caller to meet him in person, but was told to come to New Delhi instead.

The two met near the U.K. High Commission and the man promptly gave him the slip and later switched off his mobile phone.

Student mugged

An engineering student from BEML Layout was robbed of her cash and mobile phone on a bylane near Rajarajeshwari Nagar on Tuesday. She filed a complaint with the Rajarajeshwarinagar police on Thursday.

According to the police, Ananya got into an autorickshaw at the Kempe Gowda bus terminus around 5 a.m. to her house.

On the way, she had a quarrel with the driver over the fare. The driver allegedly drove the vehicle in a bylane and robbed her of Rs. 8,000 in cash and her mobile phone worth Rs. 10,000.

Arrested

The Central Crime Branch police arrested C. Virupaksha of Rajajinagar for allegedly selling pirated DVDs and VCDs.

The police have recovered 1163 DVDs and VCDs worth Rs. 1.59 lakh.

Burgled

Gold and silver articles were burgled from the house of Sidde Gowda, a retired bank manager, in Hanumanthanagar 13th Main on Wednesday night.

The Hanumanthanagar police said the incident occurred when Sidde Gowda had gone with his family to visit his daughter in Mumbai.

Sidde Gowda was informed of the burglary by his friend, who had come to the house to give a marriage invitation.

Sidde Gowda returned to Bangalore on Thursday morning and filed a complaint. The police are investigating.
