District-wise rallies planned

Special Correspondent

To create awareness of welfare boards for unorganised sector workers

VILLUPURAM: The State government has proposed to conduct district-wise rallies and meetings to create awareness of welfare boards formed for the benefit of those in the unorganised sector, according to K. Ponmudy, Higher Education Minister.

The first rally would be held in Villupuram on October 12. Ministers would explain in detail various schemes launched for the unorganised sector, Mr. Ponmudy told reporters here.

The previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime had set up 13 welfare boards for the unorganised workforce, but the subsequent regime dismantled them. After coming back to power, the DMK had not only revived those 13 boards and but also increased the number to 24, encompassing various sections of workers.

Mr. Ponmudy said these welfare boards had been constituted mainly for extending financial help such as pension, marriage assistance, scholarships, compensation for accident victims’ families, etc.

But, people in the rural areas lacked awareness of these welfare boards and therefore, several of them were yet to come within the ambit of the boards, thus losing the benefits.

It was with a view to informing them about the functioning of the boards and the benefits available that the rallies were proposed. For Villupuram district, a target of enrolling four lakh members had been fixed till October 12.

In this regard, Mr. Ponmudy held discussions with Collector R. Palanisamy, District Revenue Officer C. Kathiravan and other officials here.
