Elephants damage arecanut trees

Coimbatore: Elephants went on the rampage in arecanut and coconut farms near Kallar in Mettupplayam on Friday night. According to farm owners in Puliamarakadu and Naduthittu areas, a herd of ten elephants uprooted and destroyed hundreds of arecanut and coconut trees over the last two days. People urged the Forest Department to erect solar fencing around the area to prevent wild elephants from straying into human habitations. — Staff Reporter
