Focus on 80 ‘problem segments’

YSR to meet leaders where the party is ‘very weak’

Focus on seats that failed to return Congress since 1983
Action plan to improve Congress’ prospects before elections

HYDERABAD: The Congress has commenced a systematic exercise to examine its shortcomings in the Assembly constituencies that it could not win since the Telugu Desam came to power in 1983.

Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has decided to take up the responsibility of holding direct meetings with the leaders of close to 80 constituencies where the party is considered very weak in terms of leadership.

Dr. Reddy, who commenced Assembly segment wise review meetings with leaders, decided to first focus on the seats that failed to return Congress candidates.

Interaction planned

Over the next couple of weeks, Dr. Reddy will interact with leaders from these constituencies and give them a free hand to air their views on the party’s prospects.

Sources said the Chief Minister on Saturday undertook a preliminary exercise to find out reasons for TDP, Left and other parties winning since 1983 from constituencies such as Narsapuram, Palakole, Pithapuram, Tuni and Yellavaram, Narsipatnam, Paderu, Payakaraopet, Sompeta, Palakonda, Addanki, Bhadrachalam, Nakrekal, Nandigama, Kamalapur, Siddipet, Achanta, Harishchandarpuram, Nidamolu, Alampur, Narsampet and Yellandu.

The idea behind such an exercise is to prepare an action plan to improve the Congress’ prospects before elections are announced. Sources said Dr. Reddy asked party men to follow up their visit to Hyderabad with a meeting with APCC president D. Srinivas.

Feedback sought

Apart from this, the Chief Minister is trying to get feedback about problematic segments where groupism and other local issues could affect the party’s prospects.

Dr. Reddy is said to have summoned leaders from Narayankhed and Railway Kodur, to begin with, to sort out differences.
