THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State government will hold a Grand Kerala Shopping Festival from December 1 to January 15 in connection with Christmas celebrations. This is the second edition of the festival in the State. The plan was outlined by Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac in his budget speech last year, aimed at transforming the State into a shopping destination. The departments of Industries and Commerce, local self-government, Taxes, Cultural Affairs and Tourism are expected to pool in their efforts and resources towards organising the festival. Shoppers will win prizes of 40 kg of jewellery, selected through weekly lucky draws during the period of the festival. The prize winners will be selected region-wise from north, central and south Kerala. There will be three first prizes of 25 sovereigns of gold each. The second prize will go to three lucky shoppers from each region. The second prize is five sovereigns of gold. About 100 shoppers from each region will receive the third prize of one sovereign of gold during each week of the festival. The end of the festival will witness a grand draw, with the winner receiving five kg of gold. Shop owners who wish to join the festival have been advised to register their names with the festival organisers. The procedures relating to this are given on the web site www.grandkeralashoppingfestival.com.
