Government to discuss builders’ issues

KOCHI: Fisheries Minister S. Sarma said on Saturday that the problems faced by builders would be discussed at the official level and suitable corrective steps taken.

He was inaugurating a discussion on ‘Current economic impact on the construction industry in Kerala,’ organised by the Kerala Builders Association.

K. Babu, MLA, highlighted the need for a practical approach to sort out the issues. The State government’s policies as well as high interest rates had adversely affected the construction sector.

The prevalent floor-area ratio, wetland protection rules and the declared fair value of land were not congenial to the growth of the sector, he said.

M.D. Jairaj, president of the Kerala Builders Association; E.S. Jose, president of the Kerala Chamber of commerce and Industry; K. Lava, chairman, Builders Association of India, Cochin; and George E. George, chairman, Kerala Builders Forum; were among the speakers.

The association, in a resolution, urged the government to accord industry status to the construction sector. It also sought a cut in the multiple taxes imposed on the sector.
