Goel’s rally ends with his arrest

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: BJP general secretary Vijay Goel on Saturday led a protest rally by the Unauthorised Colony Mahasangh from Burari Chowk to Chhatrasal Stadium, the venue of Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s rally, as part of his campaign to expose the Delhi Government’s “double standards” on the issue.

The rally, which included a tableau titled “Sheila’s lollipops of fraudulent promises”, was however, stopped midway by the police. According to BJP State unit, Mr. Goel and partymen were arrested and taken to the Maurice Nagar police station. Mr. Goel accused the Chief Minister of having “woken up just two months before elections and misguiding her leader Sonia Gandhi by inviting her to Chhatrasal Stadium to distribute provisional certificates to representatives of a large number of unauthorised and unregularised colonies spread all over Delhi”.

“The Supreme Court had directed in 2006 that these colonies should be provided basic amenities before regularising them. Ms Dikshit had nine years to regularise the unauthorised colonies if she had the power, the intention, the competence, and the legal authority to do so. Does the Chief Minister have any answer why these colonies were not provided any basic amenities in the last two years?” he asked.
