RELIEF IN SIGHT: With nearly 70 per cent of the work completed, the Padi grade separator is on the road to completion.

CHENNAI: With nearly 70 per cent of the work completed, the grade separator at the busy Padi junction is expected to be thrown open to traffic by January-end.

The Rs.70-crore project, being implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), will facilitate free flow of traffic at the junction where pile-up of vehicles is common.

An NHAI official said that only five of the 100 spans of the elevated central rotary remained to be constructed. The work required more effort and time as traffic at the junction, connecting Anna Nagar, Red Hills, Padi and Villivakkam, had to be diverted.

Once the grade separator is ready, most of the vehicles will use the elevated rotary, the official said. Only vehicles going from Anna Nagar to Red Hills would take the Inner Ring Road.

The remaining work includes construction of a road over-bridge on the Villivakkam side.

Several issues, including land acquisition and obtaining Southern Railway’s approval to close the level crossing at the Villivakkam junction, had delayed the work. With all these resolved, the NHAI is confident of completing the over-bridge in a few months and, along with it, the grade separator.
