Rural cuisine stall lends more variety to food carnival

NEW ATTRACTION: The rural cuisine stall that opened at the ‘cuisine tourism’ carnival on Saturday was an instant hit among the visitors.

CHENNAI: A rural cuisine stall was opened on Saturday at the ongoing ‘cuisine tourism’ carnival at Island Grounds.

Visitors to the stall will get to taste variety of dishes from the rural areas of the State. It includes ‘panagam’ to ‘kuzhi paniyaram’ to ‘adai aviyal’ and ‘kaikari saaru.’

Many of the aspects associated with villages, including thatched huts, rope beds, have been created at the stall to recreate rural ambience. Even cows and chicken are tied to a pole in a corner of the stall.

Inaugurating the stall , which is being organised by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC), State Tourism and Culture Department secretary V. Irai Anbu said the stall aimed at introducing rural cuisines to Chennaiites and also encouraging consumption of nutritious dishes made of small grains. More cuisines would be added in the coming days as per visitors’ preference.

Nearly 35,000 people have so far visited the carnival, which began on Wednesday. Besides the cuisines from various States, the carnival with 82 stalls also offers international cuisines, including Chinese, he said.

The TTDC also proposes to have demonstration of aero-modelling and paragliding from October 7 at the carnival to attract children. The carnival would open early on Sundays, at 11 a.m. and continue as on other days till 10 p.m. On other days, the timings are from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. The carnival is on till October 12. TTDC chairman Sanwat Ram and Commissioner of Tourism M.Rajaram were also present at the opening of the rural cuisine stall.
