THENI: Discipline, self-control, quietude and tolerance of women members were the success of self-help groups. Ideals of SHG movement had been achieved now, as these had inculcated these qualities in each woman. Above all, their hard work and sincerity in repayment of loans were unparalleled, said M.K. Stalin, Minister for Local Administration. He was disbursing a revolving fund of Rs.12.5 crore to SHGs, inaugurating new buildings and laying foundation stone for new projects and disbursing welfare aid (total costs Rs.92 crore) at a function held at Andipatti near here on Saturday. Tamil Nadu stood first in the SHG movement in the country and its loan recovery was 99 per cent. It had 3.70 lakh women SHGs — 2.61 lakh in rural and 1.09 lakh in urban areas — and 16,689 men SHGs. Their total savings stood at Rs.1, 826 crore. Now, the SHGs had grown manifold with great pride, he added. A total of 1.50 lakh graded SHGs had not received any fund so far. To meet their financial needs, Rs.150 crore had been earmarked. Disbursal of revolving fund to these SHGs had been expedited, Mr. Stalin said. “Even we doubted whether the Rs.2 a kg rice scheme would be implemented successfully. But the Chief Minister had effectively implemented this scheme and further slashed the price of rice to Re.1 a kg. The Government had also introduced 10 spices for Rs.50 in response to former Chief Minister Jayalalitha’s remarks on how a rural woman could survive with mere rice,” he stated. Ministers I. Periasamy and K. K. S. S. R. Ramachandran, Collector S. J. Chiru, Tami Nadu’s Special Representative in New Delhi P. Selvendran and Periakulam MP J.M. Haroon spoke.
