Staff Reporter
KHAMMAM: Police arrested some 59 persons, including senior leaders of Opposition parties, on Saturday in connection with the looting of fertilizer outlets in Khammam.
Nallamala Venkateswar Rao, general secretary of Telugu Ryothu, farmers’ wing of the TDP, and Khammam district unit president, Mandadapu Sudhakar, were among them.
Superintendent of Police Mahesh M. Bhagwat said a majority of those who indulged in the looting spree were identified through video footage and some more arrests were in the offing.
About 130 bags of the fertilizer stolen from different godowns in the town as also some quantity of pesticide were recovered from the accused.
The SP appealed to the farmers to realize the implications of their involvement in rioting and looting. He asked those who had indulged in looting to hand over the stolen fertilizer and pesticide to the nearest police stations immediately. The police would take a lenient view towards such persons and initiate action against those who were party to the looting.
Mr. Bhagwat said some anti-social elements had provoked the farmers when they were waiting at Gandhi Chowk, Pedda Tanda and other places for fertilizer.
