Building relationships: BSNL is focussing on colleges in Erode. — ERODE: Where is BSNL going? The answer to the question: to colleges. Yes, the State-owned telecom major’s Erode unit has entered into tie-ups with colleges in the district to take some and provide some. As a “total telecom solution provider” it offers Internet connectivity for colleges. “We offer leased line connectivity to four engineering colleges and a few arts and science colleges,” says V. Velappan, DGM, Admin (Urban), Erode. In the service, BSNL takes care of colleges’ complete Internet requirements. It, however, does not stop with that. BSNL also sends, on request, its engineers as guest faculty. And, it also takes in students for short-term internships. “The aim is to have better relationship with the institutions,” the manager explains. Either the college managements can send in students, or the students with a bona fide certificate can walk in for in-plant training. A certificate is provided. Not only that, BSNL has institutionalised the training. At its Rajiv Gandhi Mobile Telecom Training Centre in Meenambakkam, Chennai, BSNL, Tamil Nadu circle, offers training on GSM, Broadband, WLL Technologies, Networking and Wireless Broadband for a fee. Alternatively, the training centre faculty will also visit colleges.
