Doctors urged to excel in their profession

Special Correspondent

CALL FOR EXCELLENCE: High Court judge R. Basant inaugurating the annual conference of the Kerala chapter of the Association of Otolaryngologists of India (AOI) in Kannur on Sunday.

KANNUR: High Court Judge R. Basant has urged members of the medical fraternity to strive towards excellence in their profession at this time when the medical profession is facing great challenges.

Inaugurating the annual conference of the Kerala chapter of the Association of Otolaryngologists of India (AOI) here on Sunday, Justice Basant said that doctors should pursue excellence on ethical and moral lines as they had great social responsibility.

Doctors should have a career-plus attitude where ‘plus’ stood for a quality of service.

Despite development of technologies, health care was still inaccessible to common people, he said.

Observing that professionals in the medical field should have concern for the deprived and compassion for the underprivileged, the High Court judge said that remuneration of the doctors should be proportionate to the service they offered.

It was improper on the part of anyone to take more than what he or she deserved, he pointed out.

Mr. Basant also called for the doctors to do constant introspection to excel in their duties.

Outgoing AOI Kerala chapter president S. Madhavan Nair presided over the inaugural session.

The new president of the chapter Mohan Chandran, in his installation speech, said that there should be public awareness on the problems caused by noise pollution.

After every festival, which is usually celebrated by bursting crackers, four to eight patients would visit the Otolaryngology specialist with hearing problem, he said.

AOI Kannur chapter president K.P.S. Prabhu was also present.
