Salem
Adding to woes: The flooded Kitchipalayam main road in Salem following heavy rain on Sunday. SALEM: Early morning rain lashed the city and its suburbs inundating the low lying areas and transforming the Old Bus Stand and Mahatma Gandhi Stadium into pools here on Sunday. The rains lasted for nearly an hour which in turn brought copious water in Tirumanimutharu river from Shevaroyan Hills. A thick sheet of water covered the streets and lanes in Pachapatti, Guhai, Kallankuthu, Anaimedu, Old Bus stand, Maravaneri and Kitchipalayam areas. Two electric poles also were found uprooted at Sarada College Road and New Integrated Bus Stand. The rains also affected various development works that are being undertaken in the city. Many tanks also received good inflows. Almost all the drainage channels were chocked due to plastic waste. Mahatma Gandhi Sports Stadium sported the look of a swimming pool with knee-deep stagnant rain water. Children from near-by areas thronged it and swam gleefully. The chocked Maravaneri drainage channel spewed sewage into the campus of the near-by Adi Dravidar Welfare Hostel forcing the inmates to stage an agitation in protest.
