New ‘Rasoi’ to check malnutrition

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit opened a new centre of “Aap Ki Rasoi” at Sultanpuri here on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Dikshit said more such centres would be opened soon. She described the opening of the new centre of “Aap Ki Rasoi” as a noble joint venture of the State Government and ISKCON, which has come forward to offer a helping hand in eliminating hunger from the city.

Ms. Dikshit said “Aap Ki Rasoi”, a new initiative under Bhagidari programme, was aimed at ensuring at least one-time full meal to the homeless, poor and destitute persons. Area MLA Jai Kishan and ISKCON Delhi State Director Brajendra Nandan Das were also present on this occasion.

Ms. Dikshit said intensification of the hunger-free Delhi campaign would go a long way in curbing malnutrition. The Chief Minister said her Government would continue to facilitate non-government organisations, business houses in distribution of cooked food at specified centres. She expressed confidence that fresh food would be provided everyday.

The Government under its new initiative would give permission to utilise night shelters for distribution of cooked food and donors would bring hygienically cooked material for distribution to the poor.

The hunger-free Delhi campaign is aimed at the hapless destitute population which often goes to sleep on an empty stomach on the city street. Thirteen such centres at Nizamuddin Basti, Jhandewalan, Chandni Chowk, Yamuna Bazar, Guru Gobind Hospital Raghubir Nagar, Shahdara, Janpath, Mongolpuri, Rehgarpura, Trilokpuri, East Arjun Nagar, R.K. Puram and Lajpat Nagar are already functioning.

Business houses, well-to-do individuals and organisations and non-government organisations have been asked to adopt one of the sites for providing meal to the destitute.
