New product to be launched in a week It has higher fat content
MADURAI: The Madurai Aavin Union plans to launch a new product — 200 ml premium milk — for this Deepavali festival season. “The proposal had been cleared and the new product would hit the streets in a couple of days,” Collector S.S. Jawahar, told The Hindu on Sunday. The product would be very useful for those who like milk with high fat content, said Mr. Jawahar who is also the Special Officer of Madurai Aavin. The fat content of normal milk is 4.5 per cent as against 6 per cent in premium milk. Plans were afoot to introduce diet milk with less fat content. For diabetics, milk with artificial sweeteners was being planned, he said. General Manager (in-charge), K. Thangarajan, said that the new product, which would cost Rs. 4.50, was mainly intended for delivering a high-quality product at a low cost to the poor. “A cup of tea at a shop costs around Rs. 4.50. With the same amount, a family of four can have tea by using this product. It would also cater to the increased demand during the festive season,” he said. The union hoped to sell nearly 2 lakh litres of milk sales a day as Deepavali approached. To meet an additional demand, the Madurai union had placed orders for three tonnes of ghee from Udhagamandalam and Tirunelveli unions. “Both unions have agreed to supply at the ‘Inter-Union rate,’ which is lower than the market rate.”
