TIRUCHI: Tiruchirapalli Regional Engineering College Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park (Trec-Step) has won the World Bank’s Development Marketplace Award 2008 for its project on mini cold storage ventures. The project was one of the 22 proposals out of 1,800 applications received from 16 countries. The award that carries a grant support of up to two lakh U.S. dollars was received by RMP Jawahar, Executive Director, TREC-STEP, at the World Bank headquarters at Washington DC, US, last week from the Vice- President of World Bank Katherine Sierra. One hundred finalists were invited for final presentation and interview by the jury. The project, Mr. Jawahar said, would meet the requirements of small farmers in preventing wastage of vegetables in farmers’ markets. The post harvest wastage of vegetables in India accounted for nearly six billion U.S. dollars annually. The project aimed at bringing down wastage by 50 per cent. As a demonstration, ten farmers’ markets would be chosen thereby benefiting up to 3,000 farmers.
