Host of authors to take part in literary fete

Thiruvananthapuram: Reigning literary stalwarts and leading publishers from across the globe will converge at Kovalam on Monday for a mega literary event — the Kovalam Literary Festival.

Litterateur M.T. Vasudevan Nair will inaugurate the three-day festival, jointly organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and Penguin India in association with The Taj Group. Poet Gulzar and writer and former UN under secretary-general Shashi Tharoor will be present at the inaugural function to be held at Hotel Taj Green Cove at 5 p.m. on Monday. Khasi singer Evalery Khyriem will render the welcome song at the function.

Historian and biographer Patrick French; author William Dalrymple; editor and author Tarun Tejpal; authors Shobha De, Namita Devidayal, Meenakshi Madhavan Reddy, Usha K.R., Jayasree Mishra, poet Tishani Doshi and Forbes senior editor Richard Morris are among those participating in the festival besides prominent Malayalam writers like K. Satchidanandan and Zachariah.

Apart from the authors, representatives of leading publishing houses will also participate in the festival. These include Penguin India chief executive Mike Bryan and Harper Collins editor-in-chief V.K. Karthika who will participate in a debate on ‘Writing in a globalised world’ on Tuesday along with Mr. Tharoor. Besides book reading sessions by authors, the programme on the second day of the festival includes a talk on Khasi literature and literature of the North East by Prof. Kynpham Singh Nongkynrih.

On the third day, there will be sessions on regional writing and sports writing.

Mr. Tharoor will deliver the K.C. John Memorial Lecture and talk on ‘Soft powers of India’ at Sri Mulam Club at 7 p.m. on Monday.
