Revellers dance to the beat of dandiya at the Navratri celebrations organised by the Sree Gujarati Samaj in Visakhapatnam.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Garba and dandiya were on display with people from all age groups having a blast at the celebrations held at the majestic Hawa Mahal located on the picturesque Beach Road.

The rhythmetical striking of dandiyas (sticks), also known as stick dance or striking sticks and the traditional attires were the highlights at the navaratri festivities conducted by Sree Gujarati Samaj on Saturday evening.

Men sported `kedia’ (small shirt that looks like a frock, colourful turbans and tight pyjamas) while women wore `bandhani’ (attractive saris).

The city has about 1,000 Gujarati families and most of them are active in business.

Navaratri celebrations by the samaj began on September 29 and various programmes are conducted daily from 9.30 pm to 12.30 am during the nine days.

The cultural programmes like fancy dress among children and best-dressed female competition were coordinated by mahila mandal president Madhu Chouhan. There are also prizes for diya (lamp) decorations.

Durga yagna

On astami, Durga yagna will be performed followed by a simple lunch.

Gujarati food festival will be conducted later during the festival season.

Navaratri signals the beginning of festival season for Gujaratis.

It will be followed by their New Year during Diwali, marked by dhanteras, Kali choudas, Lakshmi puja.

The New Year celebration will last 10 days.

“These festivals are very important for us. And as people settled outside Gujarat, we look forward to these festivals to have fun and interact with our friends and relatives from out community,” says Nikhil Oza, Sree Gujarati Samaj president.
