Rotary swimming pool gets a windfall

Vijaykumar Patil

Belgaum MP and MLA compete with each other in sanctioning funds

GOOD TIDINGS: The Rotary-Corporation Swimming Pool in Belgaum city under renovation.

Belgaum: In a welcome development, although unwittingly, two political rivals within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have made a common cause for the benefit of young swimmers who have brought laurels to their city by winning gold and silver medals in international, national and State-level meets in recent years.

It is no secret that Belgaum MP Suresh C. Angadi and MLA Abhay Kumar Patil do not see eye to eye and always look for opportunities to embarrass each other. Their rivalry sometimes turns into a competition of sorts but out of political compulsions, which is a blessing in disguise for the local people.

This time, it is the swimming pool which is getting a facelift with the funds sanctioned by the two leaders.

Mr. Angadi has sanctioned Rs. 2 lakh and Mr. Patil Rs. 1 lakh from their respective local area development funds for renovation and beautification of the Rotary-Corporation Swimming Pool in the city. Accordingly, the Rotary Club of Belgaum, which is responsible for maintenance and management of the swimming pool, has taken up development, renovation and beautification works, including for the Basaveshwar garden within the swimming pool premises.

According to manager of the swimming pool M.A. Bagewadi, the Rotary Club has taken steps to develop the premises into a Sports Complex and renovated bathrooms, changing rooms, constructed mini stadium, multipurpose hall and improve park areas. It has created facilities for roller-skating, chess and yoga. Now with an allocation from the MP’s Local Area Development Scheme, development works have been taken up for the garden, including the 235-metre stretch of pathways. The work on developing children’s play area will be taken up shortly. The allocation from MLA’s Local Area Development Fund had been utilised for the construction of boundary wall.

Works on the renovation of the swimming pool had been taken up to install a filter-plant to provide clean water throughout the year.

In addition to the funds released by MP and MLA, Regional Commissioner Amita Prasad has promised to sanction Rs. 2 lakh for the development of entrance and beautification of the swimming pool.
