Shivakumar wins taluk panchayat bypoll

He got 2,508 votes

BJP candidate polled 2,305


DAVANGERE: D. Shivakumar of the Congress won the byelection to the Alur Taluk Panchayat in Davangere taluk on Monday.

Mr. Shivakumar secured 2,508 votes while Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Shankara Naika got 2,305 votes. The Janata Dal (S) candidate, H. Raju Naika, got 747 votes.

Alur constituency was left without a representative following the resignation of M. Basavaraja Naika, who was elected to the Assembly from Mayakonda constituency.

The total number of votes recorded was 5,715, of which 155 were declared invalid.

D. Basavaraj, general secretary of the District Congress Committee, while congratulating Mr. Shivakumar, said the result showed that the people were beginning to reject the B.S. Yeddyurappa Government.

Supporters clash

Supporters of Mr. Shankara Naika and Mr. Raju Naika clashed after the elections. The police came to the spot immediately and brought the situation under control.
