Rs. 42 crore for Hampi’s growth

Funds to be used in line with master plan


The Centre has sanctioned

State Government to contribute

BELLARY: Funds totalling Rs. 42 crore have been sanctioned by the Union and State governments for the development of Hampi as an international tourist destination. The Centre has sanctioned Rs. 32.8 crore, of which Rs. 16.41 crore has already been released. The State Government has sanctioned Rs. 9 crore for the purpose.

B. Shivappa, Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the Hampi World Heritage Site Management Authority, told The Hindu that the funds would be utilised in accordance with the master plan recently prepared for Hampi’s growth.

He said the amount would be used for activities such as landscaping of the area, development of parks, fencing of monuments and construction of compound walls. To start with, the beautification of the Kamalapur junction entrance to the archaeological area; the development of the Kamalapur lake bund; illumination of historical buildings; a sound and light show; solid waste management infrastructure; public toilets; and better roads connecting Gangavati, Munirabad, Sanapur, Virupapura Gadda, Pampa Sarovar, Rishimukha Road, Anegundi village, Nava Brindavan and Chintamani Math would be the focus.

Access to far-away monuments in Hampi; introduction of special routes for tours; revamping of monuments; development of chatras at various places; aqueducts at Anegundi; infrastructure improvement in traditional village squares at Kamalapur, Mallapanagudi, Anegundi and Sanapur; construction of daises for performances in the villages; and construction of an arena near the Purandara Dasa mantapa on the banks of the Tungabhadra was also planned.

Adventure sports

The State Government’s allocation (Rs. 9 crore) would be used for development of roads, procurement of equipment related to tourism, introduction of adventure sports, camps, development of the Kamalapur lake, introduction of water sports, creation of solid waste management infrastructure in villages and for restoration of traditional houses in Kamalapura and Anegundi villages, Mr. Shivappa said.
