Belgaum
It was called to press for district status for Gokak Belgaum: The bandh call given on Monday by the Gokak Jilla Horata Samiti and supported by the Opposition parties evoked near-total response and passed off peacefully. The bandh was called in support of the demand for a new district with Gokak as headquarters. ParalysedThe bandh paralysed normal life, and all educational institutions, business establishments, cinemas and other trading centres remaining closed. The North West Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation suspended its services, both city and long-distance, for the day but resumed them in the evening. The attendance in government offices and banking institutions was thin. The samiti has decided to continue the agitation by holding a dharna in front of the tahsildar’s office from Tuesday. Samiti leader and Belgaum district unit Janata Dal (Secular) president Ashok Pujari said that the people of Gokak taluk had been demanding district status for Gokak for the past several years and had been holding peaceful protests to put pressure on successive governments to concede the demand.
