Tipplers in Karur boost revenue

L. Renganathan

KARUR: Tipplers have downed liquor worth Rs. 92.12 crore through the 112 TASMAC-run IMFL retail outlets in Karur district during the first six months of the current fiscal.

Sale of liquor picked up drastically after the State Government brought them under its control in 2003.

The government brought as many as 7,000 retail outlets run by private individuals in the State under the aegis and control of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC).

In Karur district alone, there are 112 outlets and all of them are doing brisk business if one were to go by the sales records.

In April, the shops sold 38,780 cartons of hard liquor varieties and 30,096 crates of beer bottles to fetch a revenue of Rs. 14.23 crores. In May, the shops sold 43,649 cartons of hard liquor and 38,516 crates of beer bottles to net Rs. 16.38 crore.

In June the revenue touched Rs. 15.51 crore through sale of 42,341 cartons of hard liquor and 43,097 crates of beer bottles and in July the earnings capped Rs. 15.09 crore through sale of 41,550 cartons of hard liquor and 29,799 of beer bottles.

In August the sales touched Rs. 16.11 crore as more than 44,722 crates of liquor and 29,874 crates of beer were sold. It dipped in September with just Rs. 14.78 crore worth liquor sold. During that month a total of 41,176 crates of liquor and 27,000 boxes of beer were sold, according to TASMAC sources.

Altogether, the 112 retail outlets in Karur district sold liquor and beer worth Rs. 92.12 crores in the first six months of the current financial year.

At the same time, observers attribute the high patronage to several festivals, summer sales, vacation and the general tendency of the townsmen, especially the workers in the textile, bus bodybuilding and other industries, to hit the bottle during Saturdays after they get their wages for the week that went by.
