Corrections and Clarifications

>>The third paragraph in a report “Cabinet nod for payment of interest to banks” (October 5, 2008) was “(Against the initial estimate of the scheme costing the government around Rs. 72,000, the banks and co-operative credit institutions are now expected to get over Rs. 55,000 crore in four instalments as reimbursement from the government, excluding interest, for their outgo on the debt waiver scheme.)” It should have been Rs. 72,000 crore.

>>The fifth paragraph in a report “Adverse sex ratio comes to the fore” (October 5, 2008) was “The female voter population stands at 820 and 826 against 100 males in the Civil Lines and Kishenpole (also in Jaipur city) respectively.” It should have been “against 1000 males”. (The second paragraph had the same error.)

>>A correction published on October 3, 2008 said “Article” is used in reference to the Constitution. This is in a general sense and did not mean it applied only to the Constitution. A reader points out that the Limitation Act, 1963, also has articles.

>>The subheading in a PTI report “Supreme Court dismisses sedition case against Mann” (September 30, 2008) was “‘Words don’t break homes’”. The text also said: “‘Words don’t break homes,’ a bench of Justices Altamas Kabir and Markandeya Katju observed while dismissing the plea.” What the judges said was “Words don’t break bones”.

>>In a report “‘HCs cannot transfer civil cases outside State’” (September 29, 2008), the case was transferred by the Madhya Pradesh High Court to a court in Malegaon, Nasik in Maharashtra, at the instance of the wife. It was not the Bombay High Court as was reported.

>>A report “IAF airbases to get a facelift” (October 6, 2008) mentioned Hindustan Aeronautical Limited, in the sixth paragraph. It should have been Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

>>In connection with a report “First-ever Everest skydive successful” (“International” page, October 6, 2008), Prerana Marasini clarifies that the first paragraph should have been “Three adventurers skydived from above the world’s tallest peak, Mount Everest, on Sunday”, instead of “on Saturday” as was published.

The second paragraph incorrectly said that the height of Mt. Everest is 27,000 ft. The mountain is 8,848m/29,028.871 ft high.
