Mohan George retains title

KOCHI: After trailing the young Atit B. Shah for almost the entire match, Mohan George bounced back in stunning style and retained the title in the Kerala State senior billiards championship at the Regional Sports Centre here on Monday evening.

The 49-year-old, a pharmaceutical businessman and a former junior National billiards runner-up, defeated Atit 418-412 in the two-hour final.

“I just managed, it was very, very close,” said Mohan, who led 105-98 after the first half hour but trailed 186-223 and 273-354 after the next two sessions. In fact, Atit was leading till about three minutes to go.

“I just couldn’t find my rhythm,” said the 30-year-old Atit who hails from Mattancherry. “It was fine till the semifinal but I lost momentum in the final.”

Both Mohan and Atit play against each other almost every day at the Regional Sports Centre. The two meet again in the snooker final on Tuesday evening. Atit is the defending champion in snooker. — Principal Correspondent
