Study to assess impact of climate change on rice cultivation

Shastry V. Mallady

MADURAI: The impact of climate change on rice cultivation, and its yield, is being researched by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and two international institutions.

Studies indicate that a four degree increase in temperature will reduce the yield by 10 per cent. The research, carried out under the project ‘Clima Rice,’ is aimed at developing technologies to sustain production, in the face of climate change.

Talking to The Hindu here on Tuesday, TNAU Vice-Chancellor C. Ramasamy said the project had reached the stage of experiment on the field, and the university was keen on coming out with a solution to withstand the impact of climate change on rice cultivation.

Dr. Ramasamy said the study—done in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research and the International Pacific Research Centre, Hawaii, U.S.—would take into account the climatic conditions in India and Tamil Nadu, besides various agronomic problems, so that new varieties that might sustain the impact of climate change could be found. “We have already established an exclusive centre, Agro Climate Research Centre, in our university at Coimbatore. Extensive research will go on for four years,” he said. Norway’s government is supporting the research.
