dated October 8, 1958: Gomti in spate

The river Gomti in the wake of the recent incessant heavy rains, crossed the 1936 high flood mark of 363 feet on October 6 and at nine on October 7 its water level was touching 364 feet and six inches. According to the local authorities, the water level continued to rise at the rate of one inch an hour. According to official estimates five to six square miles of Lucknow have been flooded by the sprawling Gomti.
