Vijayadasami ends on a joyful note

Staff Reporter

Rajahmundry: Vijayadasami, the last day of Navaratri festival, ended on a joyful note on Thursday. Devi Chowk, where a special pandal was arranged, was the beehive of activity as hundreds of devout thronged the place for darshan of the goddess. Apart from locals, many people from adjoining places like Kovvuru, Seethanagaram, Korukonda, Gokavaram, Kadiam came in hordes to the area. Special ‘kumkum’ pujas and ‘harati’ were a special attraction at the pandal. Many performed ‘puja’ for new vehicles.

The police had a tough time controlling the crowd and handling traffic. People from rural areas were seen purchasing small toys and eatables at stalls put up by hawkers around the chowk. Those who took ‘Bhavani deeksha’ were seen attired in red robes and offering prayers to goddess Durga at the Devi Mandapam.

MLA R. Suryaprakasha Rao, Mayor A. Veeraraghavamma, RDO M. Jitendra and MRO K. Narasimha Murthy participated in the ‘pujas’ at the Devi Chowk.

At pandals put up on AV Apparao Road, Tilak Road and other areas, ‘puja’ was performed by corporatros and other leaders.

Kalyanam

Sitaramakalyanam, which is generally performed in April, was performed by devotees at Bheemabhakthunipalem in Amalapuram. The tradition had been continuing in the village since long.

The festival would not be complete without the exhibition of special types of marshal arts called ‘Chedi –Thalimkhana’ which would be performed on the night of Vijayadasami in Amalapuram.

Breaking of coconut on a person’s stomach, a fight with long torches and other arts would be performed.
