This Day That Age
The Vatican Radio commentator, Father Francesco Pellegrino, gave the news of the death of His Holiness Pope Pius XII, Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church, at 8-22 a.m. on October 9 at his summer palace in Castel Gandolfo in the Alban Hills, south of Rome in a direct broadcast from the antechamber of the Pope’s bed room. In a voice breaking with emotion he said, “he was the most esteemed and venerated man in the world and the greatest Pope of the country.” The death of Pope Pius XII plunges the world’s largest court, numbering well over10,000 people, into nine days of official mourning.
