Home for Nano

Ratan Tata has done the wise thing, moving his small car plant to Sanand in Gujarat. Had he remained undecided whether or not to continue at Singur, he would have surely faced serious problems.

The swiftness with which Narendra Modi moved to clinch the deal shows his commitment to Gujarat’s industrialisation. He should thank Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, but for whose obduracy the project would not have shifted to Gujarat. The Nano episode is a lesson for all politicians who should understand that their overambitious moves can prove disastrous and counter-productive.

I am extremely depressed at the Tata Motors’ decision to pull out of Singur. Politicians must choose between perpetuating poverty to gain votes and pursuing economic development.

The suicidal agitation against the Nano project has dealt a body blow to West Bengal.

A power-hungry politician has inflicted a gigantic catastrophe in West Bengal for advancing her political career. She has shattered the hopes of thousands who would have directly benefited from the project, let alone the people of the entire State who would have benefited from the project because its successful completion would have brought in many more projects.

Now the farmers whose interests Ms Banerjee claimed to represent will get neither their land back nor any compensation for it. The Trinamool just used them to further its political interests.

Another feather in Mr. Modi’s cap! The relocation of the Nano plant in Sanand will help in creating better employment opportunities for the locals. It will also enhance Gujarat’s reputation as one of the best investment destinations.

The hue and cry over West Bengal losing an opportunity for industrial development has clouded some important facts: the government handed over fertile farmland to the Tatas in spite of resistance from some owners. Are their livelihoods of no significance?
