Letters to the Editor
It is sad that the Los-Angeles-based NRI, Karthik Rajaram, killed his wife, three sons and mother-in-law before ending his own life, after losing heavily in the recent stock market collapse. In this context, I am reminded of Coverly Papers by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele, who created two marvellous characters, Irus, who became a miser moved by the ‘fear of poverty,’ and Laertes, who indulged in lavish spending moved by the ‘shame of poverty.’ The writers conveyed the message that both extremes were bad. K. D. Viswanaathan, Coimbatore Karthik Rajaram’s act proved yet again that education alone does not help one acquire emotional maturity. Our curriculum should prepare students to face critical situations. Students should be helped to blossom into balanced human beings. Raja Sekar, Chennai
