Corrections and clarifications

* A sentence in the first paragraph of “Obama surges ahead” (Editorial, October 8, 2008) was “In any case, it was guaranteed that financial issues would barge into the first of three debates between the presidential candidates, a debate supposed to address national security and foreign affairs.” A reader said it should have been the second of three Presidential debates. The Editorial referred only to the first debate. The second was held after its publication.

* A report “Airtel DTH service to offer 175 channels” (“Business” page, October 8, 2008) said Mr. Manoj Kohli is the CEO and Joint Managing Director, Airtel, in the caption of the accompanying photograph, but gave his designation as Airtel Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, in the second paragraph. The detail in the caption is right.

* An item “Future Generali’s retirement plans” (“Snippets – Business” page, October 8, 2008) said Mr. Deepak Sood is MD and CEO, Future Generali India Insurance Co., in the caption of the accompanying photograph. He is the CEO of the company.

* The first paragraph in a report “15 terror suspects arrested” (October 7, 2008, page 1) was “The Mumbai police have arrested 15 new terror suspects since September 24, Joint Commissioner (Crime), Mumbai, Rakesh Maria told a press conference here on Monday. This brings the total arrests to 20.” Others have reported that the statement was made by Mumbai Police Commissioner Hasan Gafoor. The reporter clarifies that the press conference was summoned by Mr. Gafoor to announce the arrest and he read out a police statement. All operational details and the details of the suspects, etc. were given by Mr. Rakesh Maria. While Mr. Gafoor gave a break up of the arrests, a categorical statement that “15” arrests were made after September 24 was made by Mr. Rakesh Maria. The reference to Mr. Gafoor in the report was edited out.

* A cricket report “Senior batsmen keen to prove a point” (“Sport”, October 8, 2008) said, in the tenth paragraph, that Craig White is likely to make his debut. It should have been Cameron White. The error was corrected in later editions.
