TDP backs Telangana
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: Making a significant departure from its known ideological stand of unified Andhra Pradesh, Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday announced his party’s decision to support statehood for Telangana.
A resolution extending support to the demand for a separate State for Telangana was adopted at the Polit Bureau meeting of the party. Defending the resolution and a virtual reversal of its avowed policy, Mr. Naidu told journalists that it was a “historical necessity.” A political party could not afford to be oblivious to the sentiments of the people of a region. The decision paves the way for a “grand alliance” of the TDP, Telangana Rashtra Samiti, CPI(M) and CPI — in the State.
