Kannada Seva Sangha stages ‘Yakshagana’ today

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The Kannada Seva Sangha is staging ‘Sri Krishna Vivaha’, a popular ‘Yakshagana’, at 6.30 p.m. on Friday at Ghatasala Venkateswara Rao Government College for Music and Dance at Durgapuram, featuring about 20 artistes from coastal Karnataka.

The dance ballet by Sree Mahaganapathi Yakshagana Mandali near Dharmasala will depict the mythological narration of Lord Krishna’s marriage, as per the folk tradition of Karnataka.

“The best part of the programme will be the costumes and on-stage movements. They depict the age-old tradition of the folklore in an aesthetic manner. The performers, for three hours, will portray their characters in tune with background singers and orchestra.

This troupe has performed in different places in Hyderabad and after performing in Vijayawada, they will perform for two days in Visakhapatnam,” said Kannada Seva Sangha president K. Ranga Rao, here on Thursday.

“Kannada Seva Sangha was established in 1953 to promote cultural awareness among local Kannadigas. The Sangha celebrated its golden jubilee in 2003. It conducted various cultural programmes, such as ‘Yakshagana’ and music programmes by several eminent Karnataka artists and provided scholarships to local people and to Sangha members,” said M. Rajaram, one of the secretaries.
