Letters to the Editor
As opined by Siddharth Varadarajan (October 10), the interpretations of the Bush administration, expressed on various occasions, lack clarity and create confusion in the minds of the people. There is no concrete assurance from President Bush on uninterrupted fuel supply to India. HR 7081 will help only the American nuclear companies which are struggling for their own survival. This deal, if allowed to fructify, would place the nation at the mercy of America for decades. The government needs to convene a Parliament session immediately and place the facts of the agreement before the people. V.V.K. Suresh, Guntur When the Bush administration maintained that many of its commitments in the 123 Agreement were not legally binding on it and the U.S. Congress reiterated that the agreement was subject to the Hyde Act, the UPA government should not have taken President Bush’s assurances at face value. If the present or future government invests a fortune in nuclear power plants based on these assurances, it will be an inexcusable political and administrative blunder. K.Vijayakumar, Bangalore
