Letters to the Editor
The government’s decision to ban exit polls is a step in the right direction as this exercise only impedes fair and free elections and serves no useful purpose. Publication of exit poll result immediately after polling in the first phase is over will influence voters in other constituencies going to the polls in subsequent phases. Parties have been using this as a tool, engaging fictitious agencies to conduct exit polls in their favour. I request that opinion polls be not allowed once the election dates are announced. M.K.B. Nambiar, Mahe Exit polls nullify the very concept of secret ballot. The predictions based on exit polls may go wrong but they can adversely affect the chances of a party’s victory in the remaining elections. The heavens won’t fall if the nation waits till after the completion of the last phase of the elections. P.U. Krishnan, Udhagamandalam
