Corrections and clarifications

* * The sixth paragraph of a PTI report “Bush signs nuclear bill into law” (October 10, 2008, page 1) was “‘By undertaking new cooperation on civil nuclear energy, India will be able to count on a reliable fuel supply for its civilian reactors, meet the energy demands of its people and reduce its independence on fossil fuels,’ Mr. Bush said”, leading to queries on the word “independence”. The White House release (the original statement by the President on the occasion of signing H.R. 7081, the United States-India Nuclear Cooperation Approval and Nonproliferation Enhancement Act) says: “... By undertaking new cooperation on civil nuclear energy, India will be able to count on a reliable fuel supply for its civilian reactors, meet the energy demands of its people, and reduce its independence [sic] on fossil fuels.”

* * The opening paragraph of an AFP report “Nepal endorses new child as goddess” (“Newscape” page, October 7, 2008) said Nepal’s Maoist President has endorsed the choice of a three-year-old girl to be worshipped as a goddess, upholding an age-old tradition despite his government’s atheist stance. The President of Nepal, Mr. Ram Baran Yadav, is neither a Maoist nor an atheist. He is a member of the Nepali Congress and is a practising Sanatana Dharmi/Hindu. He came to power after defeating the official Maoist presidential candidate, Com. Ram Raja Prasad Singh. The President and Vice-President cannot belong to any party.

* * A tennis report “Dominika Cibulkova upsets Ana Ivanovic” (“Sport”, October 10, 2008) said, in the first paragraph, that Ana Ivanovic is the World No. 1. It was an error. Jelena Jankovic is the World No. 1.
