THANJAVUR: Villagers and members of several political parties staged a novel agitation by conducting a ‘funeral procession’ for the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board at Mariammankovil near here on Friday condemning the six-and-a-half hours power cut and also frequent power failure in several parts of Thanjavur district.

Organised by the Grama Podu Nala Committee of Mariammankovil, the villagers made a ‘paadai’ and placed waste electrical equipments. Women sang ‘oppari’ (mourning song) and one of the men in the crowd carried the funeral pyre while another man tonsured his head before taking out the funeral procession though the police and revenue officials prevented the agitators from taking out the procession.

Leaders of political parties participated in the agitation.

Mr. Kailsanathan said that the power trip would hard hit the members of the trading community, particularly in the wake of the Deepavali season.
