The teams have been provided with complete profile as well as photographs of criminals, says R. Rajaram Turning their focus on apprehending absconding criminals, including those who have warrants pending against them, the City police have constituted special teams to execute the task. Six teams have been formed in Cantonment, Fort and Srirangam ranges with the officers being assigned the task of nabbing the absconding offenders, besides maintaining surveillance in the city and on the outskirts. Four teams have been formed in Fort Range, which spreads over the city’s main business hub, and one each in Cantonment and Srirangam Ranges. Each team is being headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime). The formation of the teams coincides with the ensuing Deepavali festival season when a large number of people visit the commercial areas making it a favourite time and ground for the criminals to strike. Police authorities say warrants had been pending against 23 criminals who were absconding after their alleged involvement in different types of crimes. Majority of them were property offenders involved in crimes such as house break-in, two-wheeler thefts, baggage lifting and chain snatching. The teams were on their job with one of them having left for Tiruppur in search of an absconding criminal, say police sources. The team members have been provided with complete profile as well as photographs of the criminals in order to know their possible hideouts both within the city and outside. The move is primarily aimed at preventing crimes that the absconding criminals might attempt. Operating with a network of their own, tracking down the absconding offenders is a challenging task for the police since many of them flee the city after committing a crime to take shelter outside. The network extends to disposal of stolen property. This has been so especially in the case of vehicle lifters. Police sources say two-wheelers stolen from city limits have been recovered from neighbouring Perambalur, Ariyalur, Namakkal and Dindigul districts as well. The authorities say 30 to 40 two-wheelers, besides a lorry and an omni van, all stolen from the city, have been recovered over the past few months. A senior police official said special teams had been maintaining a close vigil in vantage areas such as bus stands and commercial areas while looking out for the absconding criminals.
