J. Venkatesan

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Friday held a meeting with Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta and reviewed the situation prevailing in Jammu and Kashmir for holding Assembly elections. Sources said that the Commission discussed with Mr. Gupta the security requirements and other arrangements necessary for holding the elections in the State, which is under President’s rule. Elections are to be held by January 10, 2009.

The three-member Commission led by Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami had visited Jammu and Kashmir early this week and met representatives of various political parties, senior civil and police officials of the State Government to review the poll preparations.
