Chennai: Four teams including lesser known Bloom Chess Academy are leading the Ramco Tamil Nadu State team chess championship which reached its half-way mark at the Nehru Stadium here on Friday. The other three leaders are former champion Indian Bank, SRM University and top seed Southern Railway. They are all on 9.5 points from possible 12 points. Three rounds remain to be played. Bloom Chess Academy with N. Surendran, B. Sekar, A.L. Palaniappan and Anand Raj swept H. Venkatesh-led Kanchi DIstrict 4-0. International Master G.B. Prakash put Indian Bank ahead with a win against single GM norm holder Arun Karthik of SRM but Arvind Subramaniam shocked Sai Meera Ravi in the fourth board to level the match 2-2. The middle boards saw marathon draws being battled on Sudhakar Babu vs Maheswaran and Shantharam vs Premnath boards. Railways scored 3-1 against Jawahar Vidyalaya after their former National ‘A’ player Mari Arul suffered a defeat at the hands of 12-year old S. Kaushik in the second board. The Railway wins came from Tamil Nadu champion International Master B.T. Muralikrishnan, A. Shankar and V. Ravichandran. A tiring double round saw host Chennai District winning 4-0 against Kanyakumari after losing by a wide 0.5-3.5 margin to SRM University in the morning session. SRM and Indian Bank had led after the morning session Important results: Third round: Indian Bank (9.5) drew with SRM University (9.5) 2-2, Southern Railway (9.5) bt Jawahar Vidyalaya (7.5) 3-1, Kanchi District (5) lost to Bloom Academy (9.5) 0-4, Kanya Kumari-C (5) lost to Chennai District (8.5) 0-4, Kanyakumari-B (6) drew with Kanyakumari-A (6) 2-2, Shakthi Academy (6) drew with Tiruvallur District (6) 2-2. Second round: Chennai lost to SRM 0.5-3.5, Bloom Academy lost to Jawahar Vidyalaya 1.5-2.5, Kanyakumari-A lost to Indian Bank 0-4, BSNL lost to Southern Railway 0.5-3.5. — Arvind Aaron
