Joint venture to set up atomic power plant

Nuclear Power Corporation and APGenco to back the project; 3,000 acres land identified

PULIVENDULA: The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has come forward to establish an atomic power plant in Pulivendula mandal as a joint venture with APGenco with an approximate outlay of Rs. 10,000 crore in the State, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy announced here on Saturday.

The State government has identified 3,000 acres of land near Kanampalle, Yerragudipalle and Velamavaripalle villages in Pulivendula mandal for the 2,000 MW plant. Each MW capacity would cost beyond Rs. 5 crore, Dr. Reddy told reporters.

The Chief Minister also announced that that a second steel plant would be established near Kadapa.

Steel plant

The Managing Director of Pennar Cements Pratap Reddy had evinced keen interest on setting up the steel plant and its capacity would be two million tonnes in the first phase.

The steel plant would require 5,500 acres of land, of which 4,000 acres were already identified and handed over to A.P. Industrial Infrastructure Corporation.

The capacity of the second steel plant would be on a par with the mega steel plant of Bramhani Industries Limited (BIL) coming up near Jammalamadugu. Dr. Reddy described the ongoing works on BIL’s steel plant as the ‘fastest ever’ in any steel plant. The blast furnace for the plant would arrive in November. Minister for Irrigation Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Kadapa MP Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy, YSR Foundation Chairman Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, District Collector M.T. Krishna Babu and OSD of Pulivendula Area Development Agency (PADA) Krishnamohan Reddy were also present on the occasion.
