Enlisting STs: Central panel sought

PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry Scheduled Tribes People’s Federation has sought the intervention of Lieutenant Governor Govind Singh Gurjar to constitute a panel by the Central government to go into issues relating to the demand for enlistment of the Scheduled Tribes in the Union Territory.

President of the federation K.Ramkumar said in a memorandum submitted to Mr. Gurjar on Friday that the committee should comprise experts including those representing the Registrar General of India (census).

There were around 18,000 people belonging to ST communities such as Irular, Kattunayakan, Malaikuravan, Kurumans and Yerukula in Puducherry, he said, adding that the federation had been demanding for the past four decades that they should be recognised as Scheduled Tribes to help them get reservation in education and employment.

Though the government had allocated one per cent reservation for the STs, it had not yet recognised and notified the list of the tribes, he said.

Recalling that an expert appointed by the government to go into the issue had already submitted report identifying the people belonging to the STs residing in Puducherry, he said the Registrar General of India (census) had declined to give clearance of the Presidential notification on the ground that the proposal for notification of the communities did not satisfy the stipulated conditions.
