Singur residents plan to meet Manmohan

KOLKATA: Residents of Singur plan to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss the issue of relocation of the Tata Motors small car project from the State.

“A letter, urging External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to seek an appointment with the Prime Minister on behalf of the Singur residents, has already been despatched,” Manas Ghosh, secretary of the Nano Bachao (Save Nano) Committee told The Hindu from Singur on Saturday.

He said the committee has also undertaken a mass signature-campaign and will present a memorandum to Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi when it meets him on October 13.

The indefinite agitation launched by a section of Singur residents (under the banner of the committee), demanding that the Tata Motors small car project be brought back to West Bengal, entered the second day on Saturday.

The agitation is being held outside the site where the project was slated to come up prior to the decision to relocate it.

Mr. Ghosh claimed that several ‘unwilling’ farmers and Trinamool Congress supporters, who were previously agitating to demand return of the 400 acres of land which they alleged was forcibly acquired, were gradually joining their agitation.

“This is an hour of crisis and we appeal to the State government, the Opposition party as well as the Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata to sacrifice to some extent, keeping in mind the future of the State and its people,” Mr. Ghosh said.
