Stand united on Sri Lankan Tamils issue: Thangkabalu
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.V. Thangkabalu has appealed to political parties in the State to sink their differences and remain united on the Sri Lankan Tamils’ issue.
Welcoming Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s initiative for an all-party meeting on the issue, Mr. Thangkabalu appealed to the parties to participate in the meeting. Only by remaining united, the State could effectively convey its feelings to the Centre.
Asserting that the Congress was in no way behind other parties in espousing the cause of Tamils of the island nation, Mr. Thangkabalu listed various measures taken by Congress-led governments in the past and the present United Progressive Alliance government.
The Congress leader also condemned Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Vaiko’s statement that the Centre was behind the Sri Lanka government’s “atrocities” on Tamils in the country.
He alleged that the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the MDMK were trying to gain political mileage out of the issue.
