NLC workers’ strike turns violent

Thermal Police station besieged; three buses damaged

CUDDALORE: Three Neyveli Lignite Corporation buses were damaged and the Thermal Police station was besieged as the Pattali Thozhir Sangam-launched NLC strike turned violent on Friday night.

The police said when the buses were proceeding to the thermal stations and lignite mines for dropping the night shift employees, some persons threw stones, damaging the windscreens. The police resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse them.

Four persons, including K. Ramachandran, vice-president of the Sangam, were arrested under the provisions of the Public Property (Prevention of Damage) Act. When they were taken to the police station, a group of persons besieged it demanding their release. The police chased them away.

The police also rounded up 15 persons under Sections 147 and 353 of the Indian Penal Code for unlawful assembly and causing hindrance to officials in discharging their duty. They were let out on bail on Saturday. Sangam president S. Selvaraj told The Hindu that since tripartite talks on the conveyance allowance issue (for which the strike was launched) were progressing, they deemed it fit to call off the strike.
